a Juan

a Juan - Momentos de Don Juan Flamenco

Here is a different Don Juan. He isnt a wrongdoer. He doesnt get punishment. There is no avenger from the hereafter, no stony guest, no dead. There is the death, la muerte. The death is a woman, the last, the definitive one.
Life is a succession of amorous adventures. Don Juan courts death with each seduction. Each adventure is a temporary form of the final adventure; each womens face is a mask in front of the face of the last.
The conflict between the last woman and Don Juan is the one between life and death. All of his adventures contribute to this conflict. The women in which the seducer is interested are always hard to conquer. Without resistance, the seduction is uninspiring. In the offence of Don Juan against the social order, his refusal to come to terms with the death becomes apparent. His sensuality connects desire and destruction.
Don Juan dances from one woman to the other because no one may be the last one.

A woman of Salamanca is the first victim of Don Juan. He surprises her at her wedding preparations and brings confusion in the traditional ritual and in her firmly established rhythm of life.
The tamborilero who plays in this scene the bridegroom is the central figure in the salamantinic folklore tradition.

a Juan

Stuttgarter Zeitung

Dramatic art and direction, the way in which the musicians and singers help to shape the mood and Antonio Robledo's score, which is equally traditional and innovative, help to give the Flamenco masterful narrative powers, the likes of which you very rarely see. Truly a fantastic guest performance.

Stuttgarter Zeitung, 13.02.1990

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

„A Juan" is a subtle characterisation which leaves the viewer feeling impressed. This short tour of Germany by the dance company from the Swiss city of Baden is one of the understated sensations of the German dance season.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, 10.12.1988

Neue Zürcher Zeitung

(...) something as well done as this is the epitome of a masterpiece.
